Caput I.

Quid sit mensura in musica plana, sive mensurata.

Mensura in musica est ordo cantuum mensuratorum secundum sua nomina et figuras: secundum sua nomina, ut est quilibet cantus planus, qui secundum suum nomen mensuram habet, supra vel infra quam non potest, ut est perfectus, imperfectus, plusquamperfectus, mixtus et commixtus: secundum vero suas figuras, ut est quilibet cantus tempore mensuratus, de qua mensura per nos alibi est tractatum. Sed quia quilibet cantus sive sit perfectus sive imperfectus et caetera de aliquo modorum existit, idcirco quid sit modus, et quot sint, et quomodo variantur, necessario est videndum.
