CHMTL is particularly well known for creating, maintaining and supporting projects in the history of music theory. The original idea, back in the 1990s, was to gather electronic transcriptions of texts about music, from both modern editions and original sources, to make these works readily available anywhere in the world and to allow searching for words and phrases. Four projects were created, starting with the Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum plus three more focusing on texts in Italian, French and English.
