Resources and Studies
for the History of Music Theory
CHMTL is particularly well known for creating, maintaining and supporting projects in the history of music theory, from which field of study bears its name. The original idea, back in the 1990s, was to gather electronic transcriptions of texts about music, from both modern editions and original sources, to make these works readily available anywhere in the world and to allow searching for words and phrases. Four projects were created, starting with the Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum plus three more focusing on texts in Italian, French and English.
The CHMTL also sponsored the publication of studies on early music theory and critical editions of important treatises.
Currently we are working at a new initiative, an online peer-reviewed journal whose aim is to contribute further to the field
