2. Musicus dicitur ille, testante Boetio, cui adest facultas secundum speculationem et rationem ipsius scientie [548] musice de modis atque rithimis deque generibus cantilenarum;

3. omnis enim ars seu disciplina honorabiliorem naturaliter habet rationem quam artificium, quod manu artificis atque opere exercetur.

4. Musicus enim cognoscit virtutem et rationem proportionum musicalium et secundum hoc iudicat et non solum per sonum.

5. Cantor vero est sicut instrumentum quoddam ipsius musici; in quo instrumento operatur, artifex;

6. sed musicus praticando ea que iam per rationem cognovit.

7. Est itaque musicus ad cantorem sicut iudex ad preconem,

8. nam iudex ordinat et per preconem preconizari mandat.
